Coal seam gas in Lorraine at the heart of ecological transition

Forbach, France, le 29 février 2016 – Une étude de février 2016 de l’IFEU (Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung), l’institut allemand de référence dans la recherche dédiée à l’énergie, l’environnement et l’écologie basé à Heidelberg, met en évidence le très faible bilan carbone du projet d’exploitation de gaz de houille lorrain par Française de l’Energie. Les résultats révèlent que cette énergie, de haute qualité et 100% française, émet en moyenne dix fois moins de CO2 que le gaz naturel importé et consommé en France (principalement en provenance de Norvège, Russie, Pays-Bas, Algérie et Qatar).

Gaz de houille : un gaz « nouvelle génération » compétitif et écologique

L’étude a comparé l’empreinte carbone de la production, du traitement et du transport du gaz naturel importé avec celle du gaz de houille produit en Lorraine. L’étude révèle que le bilan carbone global du gaz de houille produit par Française de l’Energie est d’environ 3,4 g de CO2 / kWh, soit une empreinte environnementale dix fois inférieure en moyenne à celle du gaz importé, qui s’établit à environ 32 g de CO2 / kWh. Le gaz de houille est un gaz de très bonne qualité et à haut pouvoir calorifique. Moins polluant, il est destiné à être produit et consommé localement, ce qui réduit encore son empreinte environnementale et permet de contribuer à la transition énergétique actuellement en cours en France et en Europe.

L’étude a été conduite par l’IFEU selon les critères ISO/TS 14 067 et a fait l’objet d’une revue critique par un panel de trois experts indépendants reconnus sur le sujet. Les résultats sont destinés à informer les pouvoirs publics, les associations non gouvernementales, les partenaires économiques et toute partie prenante de l’entreprise, sur la qualité et la performance du gaz de houille présent en Lorraine.

Our engineers embrace the energy transition with a pragmatic view.

Recovering abandoned mine gas avoids fatal gas emissions into the atmosphere, while local coal gas reduces the need to import much more carbon-intensive gases. Abundant solar energy is both local and renewable.

To support the energy transition, at FDE, we are constantly innovating, looking for new solutions for the future, such as hydrogen, a decarbonized energy, or CO2 sequestration in coal.

In addition, all energy produced by our Group is designed to be more virtuous. All these processes therefore make FDE the only French energy producer with a negative carbon footprint.
